Building Dreams
by Mickey Munir
Building homes was always a dream of mine. A degree in architecture from the University of Texas in 1973 was my first
step in pursuing that dream.
Like many young, newly married graduates in my field, I began my career working for a small architectural firm, learning
to apply the theories and skills from my years of study to real world projects. As might be expected, during this period we
were living in a typical tract builder starter home. I was fully aware that it might be years before we would be able to
afford the type of home I would eventually design for us, and someday others, unless we built it ourselves.
In 1976, I was fortunate enough to obtain a home site through a developer, Ray Nasher, in Spring Park. For nearly a
year, in the evenings, on weekends and often as late as midnight, my wife Michele and I worked on our first dream home,
which I designed. Wherever possible, we assisted the various tradesmen such as plumbers and framers. However, we
performed much of the work ourselves, such as the electrical work, the construction of cabinets and countertops, the
painting, the installation of the heating and air conditioning system, the tile work and other finishes.
As you might expect, we were very proud of the finished product and were pleased that we were able to accomplish so
much on our own. In fact, my cousin Louay Sharif, a retired founder of a successful business, Mostek Corporation, was
so impressed that he said, “Why don’t we build a half-dozen more of these and see what happens. In 1978,
with Louay as a financial partner, Sharif & Munir was in business.
In 1998 after receiving an Interior Design Degree from the University of Texas at Austin, my son Michael Munir, joined me
and is now my partner and the president of our company.
The design principles I developed in 1978 in the early stages of my home building career are still the cornerstone of our
company’s philosophy. That first home I designed and built was unique – just like every home I have built since.
My personal building experience convinced me that the best way to build a great home and have a great experience at
the same time, is to create an All-Inclusive Design/Build company. The All-Inclusive experience brings the talents of the
area’s finest architectural firms, interior design firms and other design professionals together under one umbrella.
All-Inclusive Design/Build home building companies were uncommon in 1978 and still are today. It is a comprehensive
approach to home building that is simple, logical and more effective than the traditional practice of utilizing several
separate, independent professionals.
